The family kindly asks that in lieu of flowers, you make a donation to Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
William (Bill) Stein, a retired FDNY firefighter and US Army veteran, passed away peacefully on July 13, 2026, just three days before his 80th birthday. Born on July 16, 1946, Bill was raised in Garden City, New York, where he graduated from Garden City High School in 1965 and was a volunteer firefighter for the Garden City Fire Department. He spent most of his life in his hometown, where he raised family before recently settling in Amityville, New York.
Bill was extremely proud of his distinguished career protecting the citizens of New York City as a firefighter with the FDNY.
Bill had a love for the water, and often enjoyed time on his boat and inviting his children and grandchildren for fishing excursions.
He is survived by his children: Liam Stein and his wife Jessica; Claire Singson and her husband Rafael; and Doreen Haviland and her husband Jacob. Bill was the cherished grandfather of Katherine, James, Gavin, Brody, Finn, Maura, and Declan, who brought immense joy to his later years. He is also survived by his sister, Carol Millot, and his former wife, Ellen Stein (O'Connell).
In accordance with Bill’s wishes, the family will hold a private service to celebrate his life and legacy. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his memory to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, an organization close to his heart as a first responder and veteran.
