Obituary

Elizabeth (Libby) Huschle passed away surrounded by family on May 21, 2026.

Libby is survived by her children Anne; Patricia “Patti” Huschle (Christopher Lawrence) of Providence, RI; William “Bill” Huschle, Jr. (Robyn Huttemann) of Medford, MA; and Claire Huschle (Carole Grunberg) of Washington, DC. Of her 5 siblings, she is survived by Sister Cor Immaculatum Heffernan, IHM of Scranton, PA; Kathleen McCabe of Southold, NY; and John Heffernan of Old Saybrook, CT. She is also predeceased by sisters Marie “Mimi” Hughes and Joanne Hanrahan.

Born in New York City in 1937, Libby was the fourth child of John and Marie Heffernan. She grew up in Forest Hills, NY and Allenhurst, NJ. As a girl Libby was annually involved in the “Allenhurst Antics” where she discovered her love of entertaining others with her spirited shenanigans.

After graduating from Red Bank Catholic High School, she attended Rosemont College where she made lifelong friends. In fact, it was at a Rosemont social where she met a handsome fellow named Bill Huschle, a Fordham Law student who was visiting a friend on campus. It was love and laughter at first sight. Bill and Libby married in January of 1960, a partnership that lasted 38 years until his death in 1998.

Libby worked as a schoolteacher, homemaker, and saleswoman at Lord & Taylor. At age 50 Lib went back to school to get her Masters in Library Science, launching a career as a Children’s Librarian. It gave her great joy when children in town recognized her as the “story lady.” After starting her library career at the Garden City Public Library,
she concluded her career as the Director of the Children’s Room at Lynbrook Public
Library. Her love of reading lasted throughout her life (is it a coincidence that the library app is called Libby?). She participated in multiple book clubs in New York and Florida.

Even in retirement, Libby rarely sat still. Her children would often joke that she was busier than they were. She travelled often, including regular jaunts to the family’s beloved cabin in Maine and voyages around the world. Her itinerary included Africa, Australia, Russia, Japan (3 times!), and so many European river cruises that she could happily provide cruise line recommendations for almost any locale. Her “Sisters Trips” were an annual tradition, the most recent one in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware last fall. Trips with her children to Scotland (including a visit to the Dewars Distillery) and to Iceland were highlights of her travel bucket list.

Libby was passionate about golf. For the last 12 years Libby wintered in Tequesta, Florida where she enjoyed a community of friends and the opportunity to play golf year round, complementing her play with the Hill-n-Tree Women’s Golf Club on Long Island. She was particularly proud of her hole-in-one in 2003. She also loved her weekly games of bridge with her closest friends.

Above all else, Libby was a woman of faith. The parish of St. Brigid’s in Westbury, NY was her spiritual home for the last decades of her life. She found great comfort in the pew at daily mass.

Libby led a long and full life and was loved by many. She will be missed.
