Obituary

Maureen Ellin O'Grady Clancy died peacefully on December 31, 2021 in her Garden City home of nearly 55 years.

Born on April 5, 1932 in Queens, New York, Maureen was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother, a devoted community volunteer and a progressive businesswoman. She was raised in New York and Connecticut and graduated from Rosemont College in 1953 with a BA in English. While at Rosemont, Maureen met Cummin Clancy, an Irish Olympian who had been recruited to Villanova University by legendary track and field coach Jumbo Elliott. Maureen and Cummin married on June 19, 1954, and two years later, they established Clancy and Clancy insurance brokerage, a family-operated, independent insurance agency that has been a fixture on Seventh Street in Garden City for decades.

In business and in the community, Maureen paved the way for women. She was first licensed as an insurance broker in 1959, during a time when it was rare for a woman to hold the certification. She was the first woman to serve on the Garden City Board of Trustees and first woman to serve as Deputy Mayor. She was also the first woman member and president of the Mineola-Garden City Rotary Club.

Maureen was a leader who made outstanding contributions to numerous organizations in the business and not-for-profit worlds. She served as a director and president of both the Garden City Chamber of Commerce and the Garden City Historical Society, and as president of the Garden City Eastern Property Owners' Association. She also served as a director on the Board of New York Community Bank and of NYU Winthrop Hospital. In 1992, she co-founded RotaCare, which provides free healthcare for Long Islanders in need. She was a woman of great faith and an active parishioner of St. Joseph’s Church, serving on the Parish Council.

The awards and recognition Maureen received over her lifetime are too numerous to list in full, but they include the Garden City Jaycees Bob Hogan Citizenship Award, the Town of Hempstead's Pathfinder Award, Garden City's Citizen of the Year, New York State Senate and Assembly Woman of Distinction, Girl Scout Juliette Low Award of Distinction, plus two Rotary Paul Harris Awards. In 2019, she was awarded a Doctorate of Humane Letters at the Rosemont College Commencement Ceremonies in recognition of her trailblazing work in business, her selfless non-profit work, and her commitment to her local community.

Maureen is predeceased by her beloved husband of 58 years, Cummin, and her brother, John J. (Jack) O'Grady, III. She is survived by her children, Maura, Sean (Dina), Sheila, Brian, and Brendan (Jenny), her grandchildren Conor (Ana), Cole, Columbia (Teddy), Clancy, Duncan, Patrick and Emma, and her great grandchildren, Luca and Adalina.

A wake will be held at Fairchild Sons Funeral Home in Garden City on Thursday, January 6 from 4-8 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held on Friday, January 7 at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church in Garden City. The family appreciates all attendees being fully vaccinated against COVID-19, including a booster dose. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Maureen's name to RotaCare.
